# Osmium Sound > Osmium Sound is free, open-source software that turns an ordinary x86 mini PC (or an old PC) into a dedicated hi-fi music player and network streamer, with a touchscreen interface, bit-perfect playback to a USB DAC, streaming services, a music library on local disks or a NAS, CD ripping and over-the-air updates. It is a complete operating system: you write it to a USB stick, install it, and the PC becomes a music appliance. Made in Italy; the website and the manual are in English and Italian. It is less suited to Raspberry Pi or other ARM boards (it runs on x86-64 PCs only), to Chromebooks, or to people who want a native desktop app on their computer. ## What it does - Bit-perfect playback: FLAC, DSD (DSD64/128/256 via DoP), PCM up to 32-bit / 192 kHz, MP3, AAC, WAV, AIFF. No resampling. - Audio output to a USB DAC or HDMI; USB DACs are detected automatically. Bluetooth speakers and headphones can be added as players too. - Streaming services: Qobuz, TIDAL, Deezer, Spotify and others, through Lyrion Music Server plugins installed from the web interface. - Internet radio: a built-in radio browser with thousands of stations worldwide, with favourites. - Music library from USB disks, internal disks and network shares (NAS / SMB), found on the network automatically. Browse by artist, album or folder, with artist pages, credits and favourites. - CD playback and ripping to tagged FLAC with MusicBrainz metadata and cover art. - Discover: endless random mixes, "keep playing similar music", similar artists, artist biographies. - Touchscreen interface optimised for small screens (1024×600 and up), dark and distraction-free, with analog VU meters in several looks. - Three modes: with a screen, headless (no screen, controlled from a phone or browser), or server-only (serves music to other players in the house). - Multi-room: several Osmium Sound devices, or other Squeezebox-compatible players, can play in sync through Lyrion Music Server. - Control from a phone: free Android companion app on Google Play (QR-code pairing; the phone can also be a player). On iPhone and iPad the third-party app LyrPlay works with it. - Web administration from any browser: network, audio, music sources, updates, backups, remote access through the user's own Tailscale account. - USB and Bluetooth remote controls (Amazon Fire TV, Xiaomi Mi Box S and G20S PRO remotes are recognised). - Works with Home Assistant through its Squeezebox integration. - Safe updates: each new version is installed next to the current one while music keeps playing; if it does not start properly, the device goes back to the previous version by itself. - Backup and restore of settings, sources and preferences, scheduled or on demand. ## What you need - An x86-64 PC: almost any Intel (Celeron, Pentium, N100/N150, Core i3/i5/i7 from 2015 on) or AMD Ryzen/Athlon mini PC. UEFI or traditional BIOS both work, so PCs from before 2015 can be used too. No powerful hardware needed. - 8 GB of storage at least (16 GB recommended), a USB stick for the first install. - A USB DAC or HDMI audio output; Ethernet or Wi-Fi. - Optional touchscreen (works without a screen as well). Not supported: Raspberry Pi and other ARM boards, Chromebooks, 32-bit-UEFI tablets and HDMI sticks. ## How to install 1. Download Osmium Flasher for Windows or Linux from https://osmiumsound.it/#install: it downloads the image, checks it and writes the USB stick. On macOS, download the ISO and write it with balenaEtcher. 2. Start the mini PC from the USB stick and follow the installer (it asks before erasing any disk). Secure Boot can stay on. 3. Finish the setup from a phone or computer browser. From then on, new versions arrive over the air. The stick can also run Osmium Sound live, without installing anything. ## How it is built Debian 13 "trixie" as a read-only system image with two A/B slots (RAUC), a native Qt 6 / QML interface drawn straight to the display (no X server), Python services, and Lyrion Music Server (formerly Logitech Media Server, the Squeezebox server) as the music server. Lyrion can run on the device itself or be an existing Lyrion server on the network. ## Main pages - [Home page](https://osmiumsound.it/): features, screenshots, hardware, download - [Installation and configuration manual](https://osmiumsound.it/manual): every step and every setting, English and Italian - [Download and install](https://osmiumsound.it/#install) - [Hardware requirements](https://osmiumsound.it/#hardware) - [Android companion app on Google Play](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.osmium.sound.companion) - [Releases and changelog on GitHub](https://github.com/adri6412/osmium-sound/releases) - [Privacy policy](https://osmiumsound.it/privacy) ## In italiano Osmium Sound è un software gratuito e open source che trasforma un mini PC x86 (o un vecchio PC) in un lettore musicale hi-fi e streamer di rete, con interfaccia touchscreen, riproduzione bit-perfect verso un DAC USB, servizi di streaming (Qobuz, TIDAL, Deezer, Spotify), libreria musicale da dischi locali o NAS, rip dei CD in FLAC e aggiornamenti automatici.
