Privacy policy
Last updated: 3 October 2026 · Covers the Osmium Sound Companion app for Android, the Osmium Sound player and this website
The short version. Osmium Sound has no user accounts and no advertising. The Android app collects nothing about you: it talks to the player you own, on your own network. Your music, your library and your settings stay on the player and on your phone. This website sets no cookies and keeps no record of your visit: your address is read to tell people from scanners and then dropped, and what stays behind is a count per day.
1. Who is responsible
Adriano Frongillo, sole developer of Osmium Sound, Italy — the data controller for the purposes of the GDPR.
- Privacy questions: [email protected]
- Help with the product: [email protected]
2. The Android app (Osmium Sound Companion)
The app is a remote control for a player you own. It sends nothing to us. There is no sign-up, no profile, no advertising, and no analytics or crash-reporting kit inside it.
- Where your data is. The address of your player, your preferences and the players you have used are saved on the phone. Uninstalling the app removes them.
- Who it talks to. Only the Osmium Sound player you point it at, over your home network — or over the remote connection you set up yourself. Track details and cover art come from that same player.
- Downloads. A track you ask the app to download is saved on your phone and stays there.
- Scrobbling. Off unless you switch it on. When it is on, the app hands the artist, album and track being played to a scrobbling app installed on the same phone; what that app does with it is covered by its own policy.
Permissions, and what each one is for
| Permission | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Internet, network and Wi-Fi state | Reach your player and notice when the connection changes |
| Camera | Only to read the pairing code shown by the player. Nothing is photographed, saved or sent. |
| Notifications | Show the playback notification with the play, pause and skip buttons |
| Phone state | Pause the music when a call comes in. You can refuse it and everything else keeps working. |
| Storage (Android 9 and older) | Save the tracks you choose to download |
| Alarms, vibration, keep awake | Ring the alarms you set on the player and keep playing while the screen is off |
3. The Osmium Sound player
- Your music stays home. Files, the library index, cover art and settings live on the player, on your network. We have no access to them.
- Streaming services. If you connect a music service, that login is stored on the player and the traffic goes straight from the player to the service. What the service collects is described in its own policy.
- Update checks. To see whether a new version exists, the player asks this website, and falls back to our download server (file.osmiumsound.it) and to GitHub if it cannot reach it. Nothing about how you use the player is sent. We do count those checks, to know roughly how many players are out there: the address and the name of the program become a short code, made with a secret that changes every week and is then thrown away, and the code goes into a counting summary and is gone. Nothing is written to your player, and nothing kept can be traced back to it.
- Usage reports to the Lyrion project — the music server that runs inside the player — are switched off, and the setup wizard never turns them on unless you tick that box yourself.
- Listening from outside the house happens only if you set it up, through the service you choose. We are not in the middle of that connection.
- Support files. The player can save a file with logs and settings to help us with a problem. It is created only when you ask for it, and it reaches us only if you send it. You can open it and see what is inside before you do.

What passes through, and what stays
Opening a page here sends your IP address and your browser's description to the server, as every request on the web does. They are used for one thing while the request lasts — telling a person from the scanners that go through any public site — and then they go with it. Neither one is written down. There is no visit log on this site: nothing kept here says that you were on it.
What stays is counts, day by day:
- how many times each page was opened, and by how many different people;
- how many times each file was downloaded — from here and from our download server — and by how many different people;
- how many of those openings came from each country, browser, operating system and site you arrived from;
- how much traffic was left out of the counts, for what reason, and from which network;
- how many different Osmium Sound players asked whether there is a new version, week by week;
- how many times the “support us on Ko-fi” link was opened, from which spot (this site, the project page on GitHub or the player's own settings pages) and by how many different people. The link passes through this site on its way to Ko-fi so that it can be counted; what Ko-fi does once you are there is described in its own policy.
How “how many different people” is counted without keeping anyone
Your address and your browser's description, mixed with a secret that changes every week, become a short code. The code goes into that week's summary and is then gone. The summary does not hold the codes: it holds just enough trace of them to say how many different ones went in. It cannot be read backwards, it cannot be matched to you, and it cannot be lined up against another week's. The secret is deleted as soon as its week ends, so from that moment nobody — us included — can tell that two visits came from the same place.
A week, and not a day, because a secret that turned over at midnight made every count a count of days: the same person on Tuesday was a different code from the same person on Monday, so “how many different people” could only ever be answered one day at a time. The price is that two visits from the same address can be recognised as the same for seven days instead of one, inside the request and nowhere else — what is kept is the same summary as before, which holds nobody.
Networks are noted by name and number — the number that identifies an internet provider or a hosting company, never a person. It is the only way to notice that a whole provider has been left out of the counts by mistake.
Why, and on what basis
To know whether the project interests anyone and which pages are worth improving. That is a legitimate interest under Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR: your address and your browser's description are handled only while the request lasts and are never stored, and what stays behind counts pages, not people. No cookies — nothing is stored in your browser for the counting. No advertising, no profiling, nothing shared or sold.
Who can see it, and for how long
Only the data controller, through a password-protected dashboard. The counts sit in Cloudflare D1, Cloudflare's database service: for this, Cloudflare is a processor under Art. 28 GDPR and acts on our instructions. Cloudflare also delivers this site, and as the operator of that network it keeps logs of its own, addresses included, for its own purposes and its own periods — that part is its doing, not ours, and it is described in its privacy policy.
The daily counts stay while the site exists: there is nothing in them left to expire. The daily secret lasts one day. Nothing else is kept.
Staying out of the count
Use a browser with JavaScript turned off, or open the browser console on this site and run localStorage.setItem('osmium_ignore', '1').
The supporters list
Under the Ko-fi button, the home page thanks the people who support the project, each with the message they left. When somebody donates on Ko-fi, Ko-fi tells this site, with the details of the donation. If the donation is public on Ko-fi, we keep the name you gave there, the message you wrote with it and the date — the same things Ko-fi already shows on its own page — and the home page shows the latest 30 different names: an older one is deleted when a newer one pushes it out. If you chose to keep the donation private, nothing is kept — not even an anonymous entry. Your email address and the amount arrive in the same notice and are never written anywhere.
The basis is our legitimate interest in thanking the people who support the project, Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, limited to what you had already chosen to make public on Ko-fi. To have your name or only your message taken off, write to [email protected]: it goes as soon as we read it. The payment itself is handled by Ko-fi and its payment providers, under their own policies.
Other parties involved in this site:
- The pages are served by Cloudflare Pages and the downloads come from GitHub and from file.osmiumsound.it; like any web server, these see the request and your address. Our download server counts the file and forgets the address, exactly as the pages do; what GitHub and Cloudflare keep is theirs.
- The page font is loaded from Google Fonts, which sees the request your browser makes to it.
- Links to GitHub, Ko-fi and Facebook lead to those sites, each with its own policy.
Where this goes in the world. Cloudflare, GitHub and Google are companies in the United States, so a request that reaches them — which carries your address, as every request does — leaves the European Union. Those transfers rest on the adequacy decision the European Commission adopted for the EU–US Data Privacy Framework, and, where that does not cover them, on the standard contractual clauses in the data processing terms each of them applies. We send them nothing on our own account: what they see is the request your browser makes.
5. What we never do
No advertising, no profiling, no selling or sharing of data, no third-party tracking kits in the app or in the player.
6. Children
Osmium Sound is not aimed at children, and nothing is knowingly collected about them.
7. Your rights
Under the GDPR you can ask what data we hold about you, get a copy, have it corrected or deleted, and object to how it is used. Write to [email protected].
One honest note about what this means here. For the app, the player and the website, the answer is almost always that we hold nothing about you: the app and the player never send us anything, and the site and the download server keep only counts, in which there is nothing of yours to find, correct or delete — not because we will not look, but because there is no line with your name, your address or your device on it. The one exception is the supporters list described above: if you donated publicly on Ko-fi, your name, your message and the date are there until a newer name pushes them out or you ask us to take them off.
If you think your data has been mishandled you can also complain to the Italian data protection authority, the Garante per la protezione dei dati personali.
8. Changes to this page
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it, and anything that matters to you will be said plainly here.
In breve.
- Dove stanno i tuoi dati.
I permessi, e a cosa serve ciascuno
| Permesso | A cosa serve |
|---|---|
Puoi aprirlo e vedere cosa contiene prima di farlo.
4. Questo sito
Cosa passa e cosa resta
- quante volte è stata aperta ogni pagina, e da quante persone diverse;
- quante volte è stato scaricato ogni file — da qui e dal nostro server dei download — e da quante persone diverse;
- quante di quelle aperture sono arrivate da ogni Paese, browser, sistema operativo e sito di provenienza;
- quanto traffico è stato lasciato fuori dai conteggi, per quale motivo e da quale rete;
- quanti lettori Osmium Sound diversi hanno chiesto se c'è una versione nuova, settimana per settimana;
7. I tuoi diritti
Scrivi a [email protected].
